The
Harvest Recording workshop is a 10-week instructional program in music
production and engineering designed to provide the student with an
introduction to the technical study of audio recording techniques, music
production methods, and various music business issues affecting
participants in the recording industry. Instruction is provided
through a combination of lecture and
hands-on training on digital recording equipment utilizing
state-of-the-art software in a professional recording studio.
Two-hour classes are held one day a week during the 10-week period.
Additional six hours of lab time is provided in addition to the lecture
time.
TOPICS TO BE COVERED
Some of the topics to
be covered in the Harvest Recording Workshop are
the following:
Introduction to recording techniques; the role and responsibilities of
the
recording engineer;
music production methods; the role and responsibilities of the music
producer;
studio set-up for basic tracks and overdubs;
fundamentals and functions of the mixing console, digital recording and
analog tape machines and outboard gear;
use of recording software, primarily ProTools;
microphones and miking techniques;
mixdown; use of special effects, autotuning, tempo adjustment,
compression,
reverb, etc.
mastering and editing; and
copyrights, music licensing, production agreements, music publishing,
and
other music business issues.
WHO SHOULD REGISTER
The following categories of individuals are encouraged to enroll:
anyone interested in putting together a home recording studio;
individuals interested in pursuing a career in the music recording
industry
and those interested in music as a hobby;
musicians, singers, songwriters.
Those who have prior recording experience, as well as those who have no
prior experience, are likely to benefit from the course.
Because the class
will be limited in size, ample opportunity will be available to gear
instruction
to each student’s individual level of understanding. In
addition, each
student will be given the opportunity for lab time outside of class time
for
one-on-one instruction.
INSTRUCTORS
The course instructor for recording and music production techniques is
Robert J. Carothers. Robert Carothers has a Bachelor of Music in
Music
Production and Engineering with honors from Berklee College of Music
where he was a
recipient of an Al Dimeola guitar scholarship. He has been a
member of the
National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and has over 20 years
experience
in the music industry as a music producer, studio owner, performing
musician,
singer and songwriter. He has worked as a consultant to the
National Music
Center for the Music Technology Program of Cuyahoga Community College
and has
also been a member of Tri-C’s music department faculty.
The course instructor for the class on music business issues affecting
recording industry professionals is Deborah Carothers. A member of
the Ohio
State Bar Association, Deborah Carothers is an attorney with a juris
doctorate
degree from the University of Akron who also has several years of
professional
experience as a singer and songwriter.
COST
The cost for the entire course (10, 2-hour classes, lab time) is $550
per
